Although they are usually used as synonyms, liposuction and liposculpture fulfill different goals.

If you are considering enhancing your body’s contour with cosmetic surgery, you have probably heard of them; however, it is not always clear if they are the same procedure or which are the results you can expect from each one.

That is why, we want to let you know which are the specifications of both procedures, their results, and who is a candidate for each one.

Liposuction

Is a type of cosmetic surgery that remove fat accumulated under the skin with a cannula connected to a suction pump. That is, the accumulated subcutaneous fat is “suctioned” from the body.

This procedure is ideal to eliminate excessive fat in men and women in hips, thighs, abdomen, breasts or chest, arms, and face.

José Luis Salas M.D. submitted his personal his personal clasificacion of liposuction to the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery (AACS) and was accepted and recognized based on all the background he presented.

It is classified in small (up to 500 cubic centimeters), medium (between 500 and 4,000 cc), large (from 4,000 to 10,000 cc), and mega-liposuction (more than 10,000 cc).

It is recommended for people that are over their ideal weight and have fat accumulated in unaesthetic areas.

This procedure requires general anesthesia and a post-operatory recovery period.

Liposculpture

It also removes and eliminates fat, but this fat is grafted to give volume and model specific parts of the body that patient wants to enhance. Unlike liposuction, whose only priority is to remove excessive fat, liposculpture is a procedure that focuses on enhancing the contour of neck, cheeks, buttocks, abdomen, among other areas in men and women.

It is a procedure that removes permanently all the fat deposits in areas that resist diet and exercise, and is performed under local anesthesia.

The patient is anesthetized, and then, the surgeon uses microcannulas that remove excessive fat with a suction pump.

This procedure is indicated for people near their ideal weight, exercises regularly and preferably have a healthy diet.

As you can see, both procedures are effective, but fulfill different roles. While liposuction focuses on removing large amounts of accumulated fat, liposculpture has the objective of removing fat and re-injecting it to provide the desired volume in the area of their choice.

However, your surgeon will be the one to explain and determine which procedure is the best for you, depending on your goals, expectations, and general health.
