It is possible that over the last three or four years, you have heard the term “Superfoods”, and about all the nutritional benefits that they have.

By definition, “Superfoods” are foods that have a high amount of nutrients that are good for your health. However, many dietitians consider it is more a marketing term than a proper nutritional term.

There are no set criteria to determine what is and what is not a Superfood.

These don't have their own food group. Although, this does not mean that they are not healthy. Here are some nutrition tips for you:

Nutrients You Can Find in Superfoods:

  • Antioxidants: They help protect your organism against certain types of cancer.
  • Healthy Fats: They help prevent heart diseases.
  • Fiber: It promotes digestion, and helps prevent diabetes.
  • Photochemical substances: They are chemicals that lend color and scent to plants, which have multiple health benefits.
  • It is important to highlight that even if these nutrients help reduce some health problem risks, you shouldn’t rely only on them, because they are not a substitute for a healthy lifestyle in general.

Some of the Most Popular Superfoods Are:

Blueberries: These berries are usually called Superfood because of their high content of vitamins, fiber, and phytochemicals. A study published in 2013 discovered that eating a high amount of flavonoids, that can be found in blueberries and other berries, reduces the risk of heart conditions in young women.

Kiwi: It has a high content of Vitamin C, Vitamin K, and minerals like: calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, copper, and manganese. It also has antioxidants. It has serotonin, a hormone that induces and maintains sleep, so if you have sleep disorders, this fruit is for you.

Kale:  Kale definitely meets all the requirements of the definition of a Superfood.  This green leafy vegetable is full of Vitamins A, C, and K, as well as fiber, calcium, and other minerals.

Salmon: As sardines and other fish, are rich in omega-3, which helps reduce the risk of heart conditions and stroke

Quinoa: This grain is very popular among those who want to have a healthy diet, because it has essential amino acids. It also has high amounts of folate, magnesium, phosphorus, and manganese, as well as carbohydrates rich in fiber.

Other foods that are called Superfoods are: pomegranates, spinach, broccoli, cauliflower, strawberries, other berries, cherries, coffee, and whole grains.

As mentioned before, Superfood may be a term created for marketing purposes. However, including in your diet high amounts of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean meats is one of the best nutritional advices you could follow to have a full and healthy life.
