For too many women, getting breast implants, is like a dream come true. After years using push-up bras and other tricks to make your breasts look bigger, this surgery can be the answer to showing off the perfect cleavage.

However, even when a breast augmentation procedure is an increasingly popular, safe and affordable surgery, it’s still important that you learn all about it, so you can make an informed decision.

These are 10 of the most frequently asked questions by our patients when they are weighing the pro's and con's of a breast enlargement.

1. Can I breastfeed my baby without any risk if I have breast implants?

Breast implants are not an impediment at all to breastfeeding. Scientifically, there is no evidence of negative consequences for the baby or the mother.

2. Can my body reject the implants?

Your body can reject the implants, but this is not a common case. It is impossible to know this before the surgical procedure. If the body rejects the implants, these must be removed in a new operation through the same incisions of the previous surgery.

3. What happens if one of the implants bursts?

Even though this is very uncommon, it can happen after a severe trauma; for example, a car crash. This is not a big issue because the modern implants prevent the spilling or spreading of the silicon in the body. In this case, an implant replacement must be scheduled, but there isn’t any risk or negative consequence for your body.

4. Is it necessary to change the implants at any given time or are they permanent?

Once they are implanted, they have no expiration date. If the periodic medical examinations don’t find any problem, you don’t need to change them. Today, many manufacturers provide a lifetime guarantee for the implants and assure that it will not be necessary to change them.

5. Can the breast implants cause cancer?

It’s scientifically proven that they don’t cause this illness nor any immune system disease.

6. After a breast surgery, is it harder to detect potential tumors?

It is necessary to perform complementary exams as an MRI, for a diagnosis, this is because you can get false negative results in a mammogram. However, a gland can be pushed out by the implant, so it’s easier to detect any nodule in the palpation exam.

7. If I have sagging breasts, do I need implants?

The implants provide volume, but they can’t lift or uphold the breast. To lift the drooping breasts, the right procedure is really a breast lift, which cuts out the surplus skin and replaces the gland, improving the shape. The implants are used just to add volume to the breasts after the lifting.

8. Which implants are better, the rough ones or the smooth ones?

Either one has great quality.

9. Is there any common complication?

The more common complication is a capsular contracture, which happens when the tissue forms, around the implant, a thicker scar than normal. Depending on the contracture grade, the doctor will decide on the solution. If it’s high, a new surgery could be necessary. Talk to your doctor about any discomfort or any questions after your surgical procedure.

10. Which are better, round implants or drop implants?

The drop (or anatomical) implants are used for a reconstructive plastic surgery, or post mastectomy. In other cases, if the surgery is aesthetic, it’s better to put in highly cohesive silicon round implants, since they provide a natural look.

Before you undergo any surgical procedure, it’s important for you to solve any questions and be completely certain about the procedure your about to undergo. It’s also critical to choose a professional and expert in the field.
